Boston Temple Challenge Oral Arguments Heard
The 1st Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals
heard arguments Monday over the status of the Boston Massachussets
Temple. Three neighbors of the Temple have challenged the zoning law
that allowed the Church to build the Temple, claiming that it favors
religions, in violation of the U.S. Constitution's first amendment. The
case could even set precedent, as the neighbor's lawyer expects it to be
appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. |

Local LDS Politician Named 'Newsmaker of the Decade'
The Orange County, California Daily
Pilot, owned by the Los Angeles Times, chose LDS church member and
long-time Orange County politician Marian Bergeson as "Newsmaker of
the Decade." Bergeson, who is currently a member of California's state
Board of Education, served as State Senator, County Supervisor and as
Secretary of Child Development and Education under Governor Pete
Wilson during the past decade. |

LDS Couple is 'Stupid' on Letterman
LDS couple Ryan and Marilee Barker of Murray, Utah
appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on New Year's Eve to
perform a "Stupid Human Trick" that the couple developed while
students at Ricks College. The couple have been married for nine
months. |

Mormon Folk Art included in New York Exhibit
The Museum of American Folk Art's current
major exhibit, Millennial Dreams: Vision and Prophecy in American Folk
Art, includes Mormon works among the 75 objects displayed. The exhibit
covers three centuries of American utopian communities, including the
Shakers and even Catholics in New Mexico in addition to Mormons. |

New LDS Conference Center Construction Detailed in Civil Engineering
The architects and engineers behind the LDS
Church's new Conference Center detailed the challenges and methods used
in constructing the building in the current issue of Civil Engineering,
the journal of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In their
article, they make clear the magnitude of the challenges faced because
of the building's size, the size of the auditorium, the building's
depth, the landscaping use of the roof and the LDS Church's requirement
that the building last at least 150 years. |
