LDS Couple is 'Stupid' on Letterman
Deseret News 31Dec99 P2
By Scott Pierce: Deseret News television critic

MURRAY, UTAH -- LDS couple Ryan and Marilee Barker of Murray, Utah appeared on the "Late Show with David Letterman" on New Year's Eve to perform a "Stupid Human Trick" that the couple developed while students at Ricks College. The couple have been married for nine months.

The Barkers developed the trick while studying anatomy. "We were up at Ricks College and I think that had a lot to do with the spare time that we had on our hands," Ryan Barker said. "We were studying anatomy and physiology and we were learning about the air passages and all that kind of stuff. And she had some bubble gum in her mouth and . . ."

In the trick, Ryan blows air through his wife's nose, inflating a balloon. When they originally developed the trick, they used bubblegum.

After the show, the couple were pleased with the results. "It went well. It was fun. Our trick didn't go as good as we hoped it would, but it still went good. We were pretty nervous, but it wasn't actually that bad. We rehearsed this morning, and it kind of didn't seem real. It was just fun."
