President Hinckley, Mitt Romney to Speak to National Press Club National Press Club Calendar 7Jan00 N1 http://npc.press.org/npcevents.cgi

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley is scheduled as the guest speaker at the National Press Club's March 8th luncheon just a month following a speech by the Salt Lake Olympic Committee's Mitt Romney, who will address the luncheon February 11th. The luncheons, which are held weekly, are generally reserved to hear major newsmakers, such as presidential candidates, members of congress, cabinet secretaries and diplomats.

Speakers are selected by a committee of members of the club under the direction of the club president. The Club brags that "more heads of state and government appear at the National Press Club than any other forum in the world outside the oval office." According to the club, speakers are selected based on newsworthyness, national or international stature and the degree to which they have already been available to the press.

The National Press Club is considered one of the premiere professional societies for journalists. Luncheon speeches are frequently broadcast on National Public Radio and on C-SPAN.
