McConkie May Run for Congress
Salt Lake Tribune 23Jan00 D2
By Paul Rolly

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- LDS Church member Kathleen McConkie says she is considering a run for U.S. Congress against Rep. Jim Hansen. McConkie, who uses her married name, Collinwood, in her community and in the Church, is the niece of Apostle Bruce R. McConkie and Church attorney Oscar McConkie. She also has yet to decide whether to run under her maiden name, which she uses for business, or her married name.

McConkie says she is testing potential support for her run as a Democrat against the 20-year Republican veteran. She ran unsuccessfully for Davis County Commissioner, and her husband, University of Utah business professor Dean Collinwood, has also run unsuccessfully for the Utah Legislature.

She is an attorney and partner in the well-connected Salt Lake City law firm Randle, Deamer, McConkie and Lee, and is the mother of 10 children. Political involvement seems to run in the family. Her older brother, Jim McConkie, also ran for Congress and for Utah attorney general. He is planning to run against Senator Orrin Hatch for his Utah Senate seat, if current Utah State attorney general Jan Graham doesn't run.
