PROVO, UTAH -- Another BYU football player has left the school because
of honor code violations. Sophomore kick returner Jaron Dabney, who
averaged 23.6 yards per return during the season that just ended,
withdrew from BYU last week, becoming the fifth starting player in the
last year to leave or be expelled from the school.
Dabney had run into both honor code and academic trouble in the past. In
1998 he missed a season because of his academic performance, and the
year before that he was on honor code probation for a shoplifting
arrest.
When he returned last fall, Dabney said that his absence had helped turn
him around, "God showed me I need to be more responsible and take care
of the important things in my life," he said at that time.
The four other starters with honor code trouble since last January were:
running back Junior Mahe and safety Tyson Smith, both of whom will
return to the team in the fall; running back Ronney Jenkins, who
transferred to Northern Arizona, and cornerback Heshimu Robertson, who
completed eligibility at the end of this past season after returning to
the team.
