LDS Congressman Merrill Cook of Utah is facing yet another challenger
in the next election. Mark Emerson comes to the race well qualified,
having most recently served as Chief of Staff for Representative Chris
Cannon, who is also LDS. Prior to that, Emerson was chief of staff for
Nevada's John Ensign.
Emerson says, "I'm electable, and I can win. I don't believe that Cook
can. So I'm in." Executive director of the Utah Republican Party, Scott
Simpson, says that Rep. Cook knows he's in a vulnerable place as he
defends his seat. "Unseating an incumbent is a difficult thing to do. I
think Mark is a talented guy, and he's certainly proven capable of
running hard campaigns."
Jeff Hartley, a fan of Emerson's, was at his announcement. "Nobody will
out hustle him, nobody will out work him, nobody knows the system
better, nobody knows the issues better. He's young, energetic and
articulate. How can you lose?"
