President Hinckley Visit's Guam
(Quite an impressive night)
Chie Collard 3Feb00 N1
[Excerpt of family letter forwarded by Kenneth W. Collard]

We went to the Special Fireside at the Hilton Monday night to see President Hinckley. It was quite an impressive night. There were more than 700 people attending this gathering. Many came from the other near by (and some are remote) islands such as Saipan, Chuuk, Palau, Yap, Majuro, Pohnpei and as far as Ebey and Kosrae.

As we drove into the Hotel premises, seeing policemen at the hotel intersection, numerous security guards standing along the driveway, and more guards everywhere within the hotel, it slowly sunk in to us that the President Hinckley IS a worldwide VIP and it was such a privilege to see him in person. We spoke to Elder Francisco and he said that there are about 110 Elders in this region and about 60 of them flew in to attend this Special Fireside.

Sister Marjorie Hinckley's speech was a very sweet and witty speech during which everyone shared smiles and laughs. President Hinckley's speech was a powerful yet warm speech. He was here on Guam thirty five years ago during a short stop over en route to Asia from Hawaii to re-fuel the plane. He was met by all the members of the church in Guam at the airport. There were only fifteen of them at that time. He talked about the importance of the family values and how important it is for everyone to be a good citizen to form a good society. When he spoke, you could never tell that he is going to be 90 years old soon.
