LDS State Senator Teased Over Drinking Coffee Allegation
(Phoenix) AZ Republic 13Feb00 D2

PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- LDS Church member David Petersen, an Arizona State Senator from Mesa, was accused last week by a woman who says she not only saw the senator driving alone in the carpool lane, but also drinking coffee while he was driving. Petersen has admitted to driving in the carpool lane, but says the witness is wrong about the coffee.

"I sometimes eat sunflower seeds and spit them into a cup, so that's probably what she saw," Petersen said. "People have been threatening to turn me in to my bishop."

Petersen says he will make amends for the HOV infraction even though he was not pulled over or cited because of one of the people teasing him about it, his mother, "My mother said I have to pay the fine ($80)," Petersen said. "So, now I'm looking for some sort of charitable organization to donate to."
