Did Roman soldiers shake hands with ancient Mexicans?
New Scientist 12Feb00 N6
By Jonathan Knight
Although there has long been anecdotal evidence of links between the
ancient Mediterranean world and the New World, the first official modern
scientific discovery of such a link has been announced in this week's
New Scientist, a UK science magazine (12/02/00 issue)
The find was made by a University of Calgary (my alma mater, I'm proud
to point out!) archaeologist, with some colleagues, from a site in the
Toluca valley, about 65 km NW of Mexico City, and is that of a terra
cotta Caucasian with curly, "Roman"-style beard. The head was dated by
sophisticated testing to about 210 AD. Archaeologists are now admitting
that Mediterranean-New World links cannot be considered out of the
question.
