A Texas researcher told the American Association for the Advancement
of Science recently that a genetic analysis of native Americans shows
that at least some native Americans were colonized by Europeans
thousands of years ago. The genetic study found that the four major
lineages in native Americans can be traced to Siberia and north-east
Asia, while the fifth, which is a much more minor founding lineage,
can be traced to Europe.
Dr. Theodore Schurr of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical
Research in San Antonio, Texas produced the data from his genetic
analysis of native Americans. He says, "This is one of the intriguing
findings that we have come across recently. These data imply that
haplogroup X was present in the New World long before Europeans first
arrived in the New World, before Columbus or the Vikings or anybody
else." Haplogroup X is his designation for the group originating in
Europe.
The native American groups included in Haplogroup X include the
Algonkain-speaking tribes, such as the Ojibwa, as well as two
pre-Columbian north America populations. The same genetic profile is
found in between two and four percent of European and Middle Eastern
populations, particularly in Israel.
