BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA -- The Birmingham Alabama Temple's walls are up,
and the building is about one-third of the way done, according to
Elder Dale Arave, who is overseeing construction on the building,
"The framing has been done, and we are pleased with the progress that
has been made. Now comes the slow part as we finish up." The Temple
is one of the Church's new smaller temples.
When complete, the building will be white marble attached to a steel
framework. In about a month the steeple will be raised and put in
place on the building, and the statue of the Angel Moroni will then
be put in place. Construction should be complete about mid-summer,
and an open house will be scheduled for the building before its
dedication.
"It will be a beautiful building, well lighted, and as beautifully
landscaped as any building of its size in the area," said Arave. "It
isn't big, It will seat only about 80 people. . . . You may pass here
on weekdays and see the parking lot full three or four times a day.
It will serve a lot of people, many from this area, but many from far
away."
Arave added that opposition to the building has been little, "We had
a bit of opposition from some areas when we were selecting the site
(for the temple)," he said, "but since we settled on Gardendale and
started work here, there has been nothing but good things from the
people involved."
