Hawaii's LDS Surfing Sisters
(Kaneohe Hawaii) MidWeek 23Feb00 P2
By Jason Kaneshiro
The Magelssen family of Aina Haina in Hawaii has earned a lot of notoriety
in the Hawaiian surfing scene, not only for their surfing talent (which is
world class), but also for their well-rounded lifestyle. The article notes
that the four sisters ( Noelle-19, Marie-17, Joy-14, and Kristen-12) "stand
out for their wholesomeness, for their intelligence, for their smiles and
for their natural ability."
The sisters have achieved not only the ability to balance a board on the
crest of a wave, but in many other areas of their lives. The oldest sister
earned an academic scholarship to BYU, while the next has already been
accepted there and hopes also to attend medical school. The other sisters
are of course honor role students. Each of them plays the piano and pursue
other artistic interests. And although they surf any chance they get, they
can't surf on weekdays unless the GPA is over 3.5; and they never surf
"recreationally" on Sundays. Of course, when your Dad's the bishop, you
ought to show up for Church.
Fourteen-year-old Joy may have the brightest future in the sport. She
qualified for the finals in every contest she entered and won the Hawaii
Longboard Federation's series despite competing as a 13-year-old in the
19-and-under division. "She's got great coordination, great style. You can
spot a future world champion in her.... I don't know of any other
longboard girls that are anywhere near as good as her. I didn't see Rell
[Sunn, legendary girl surfer] at 14, but I can't imagine she was that
good at 14, and she was the best longboard girl surfer in the world."
