LDS Scout Honored For Saving Scout Leader

PROVO, UTAH -- LDS Scout Jonathan L. Payne will be honored doday by
the Utah Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge for his life-saving
heroics last year when he saved his scout leader from drowning in the
Green River. Payne will receive an award from the foundation at a
ceremony at the Little American hotel in downtown Salt Lake City. He
is then scheduled to enter the LDS Church's mission training center
later today.
Payne earned the recognition when he dove into the rapids of the
Green River to save a scout leader who had fallen into the river and
was pinned underwater against the rocks. For his heroism, Payne had
previously received the highest lifesaving award from the Boy Scouts
of America.
The foundation will also recognize three others for their heroism at
today's ceremony. The awards will be given out by Elder M. Russell
Ballard of the LDS Church's Quorum of the Twelve.
