NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA -- Voters in the state of California will
rule today on whether or not to recognize non-traditional marriages
performed in other states. The issue has proved highly controversial
in California, and polls suggest that the voters will approve the
proposition, prohibiting the state from recognizing marriages that
don't involve one man and one woman.
Religious leaders across the state have also weighed in on the
measure. The LDS Church, along with the Roman Catholic and
evangelical Christian churches are all supporting the measure, while
other protestant sects oppose it, saying that it will lead to
discrimination. Many major political leaders in California and the
nation have weighed-in against the measure
Support in LDS congregation seems high, and local leaders continue to
urge members to support the measure and to volunteer to get the vote
out. Mormon-News has received reports of LDS congregations cancelling
Sunday School, Relief Society and Priesthood meetings to give members
time to solicit the support of their neighbors. Other congregations,
even outside of Calfornia have been urged to fast and pray for
passage of Proposition 22.
The latest Field Poll on the issue shows that voters favor the
measure by 13 percentage points. The poll had a margin of error of 3
percentage points.
