SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- According to Salt Lake Area Box Office
Statistics provided by ACNielsen EDI, Inc., the LDS film God's Army
is currently #2 and rising in the region. The film is just slightly
behind the nationally released film "Mission to Mars," and is
expected to take over the #1 slot by the end of the week. "God's
Army" is a film by LDS director Richard Dutcher is about LDS
missionaries serving in the Los Angeles area.
The ACNielsen EDI report includes just the film's opening weekend
(Friday, Saturday and Sunday) on 12 screens in the Salt Lake area. On
those screens, the film grossed more than $7,000 per screen, close
behind "Mission to Mars," which grossed about $7,500 per screen
nationally. A typical per-screen weekend take for a top-10 film is
about $5,000.
The film also received a strong review from the Deseret News' film
critic Jeff Vice. Vice says that Dutcher has accomplished a
"cinematic tightrope act," treating its subject matter accurately
while managing to avoid giving offense to its LDS audience. Vice
admits that the film has "a few wobbles along the way," but says that
"this independently produced drama is nothing short of a triumph."
