Fresno temple boon to Merced Mormons
  Modesto CA Bee 21Mar00 D1
By Lisa Millegan: Bee Staff Writer

MERCED, CALIFORNIA -- Millegan, a writer for the Bee newspapers of
central California, again writes about the new Fresno LDS Temple. In
a more extensive article, she explains more about the Temple, its
location and purpose.
LDS Church members in Central California have previously traveled to
the Oakland Temple, about two hours away from Merced, California. The
new temple is just 40 minutes from Merced, "That will allow us to go
more often," said Jerry Callister, president of the Merced Stake.
Steve Tree, president of the Porterville stake, agrees, "It's a great
blessing to members of the church here in the Central Valley."
The Fresno Temple is the Church's fourth in California, after Temples
in Los Angeles, San Diego and Oakland. It is also the first 'smaller'
temple in California -- at 10,700 square feet, it is just one-quarter
the size of the Oakland Temple.
The FresnoTemple open house begins Saturday and runs through April
4th. The dedication is scheduled for April 9th.
