SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Utah's journalism community will mourn the
passing of DeAnn Evans. Evans, who died suddenly last weekend,
stood as a vanguard for journalistic ethics. She was absolutely
undeviating in her regard for truth and accuracy. She did not neglect
the human side of her art. She covered the news with sensitivity and
forged friendships along the way. Her years as managing editor of
this newspaper was followed by years as an associate professor of
communications at the University of Utah, placed journalism at a
premium level statewide. She motivated many reporters and touched
their lives by encouraging them to do their jobs better.
Evans had a huge hand in lifting the collective standards of all
Utah media. She served as a loving mentor and as an uncompromising
demander of excellence, all at once. Evans lived what she taught, had
an unwavering character and didn't waddle in the mud of ethical gray
areas. She made a career of clearly defining ethical standards and
was among the most respected of all Utahns in the media.
Evans' legacy will live on in the many young journalists she
influenced. Some of those are working at media outlets right now.
Others were enrolled in her class, expecting to learn more from her
this week. They aren't likely to forget her lessons, and all of Utah
will benefit from that.
