BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA -- The steeple and statue of the Angel Moroni was
placed on the new Birmingham Alabama Temple in Gardendale, Alabama on
Thursday morning, "creating a landmark that's the first of its kind
in Alabama," according to the Birmingham News. The Temple is
scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer, according to
Birmingham Alabama Stake President Richard May, "It's going to be
one of the most attractive buildings in Gardendale."
The top of the statue reaches more than 60 feet above the ground,
toping a building that can easily be seen in the area. But,
unfortunately, it can't quite be seen as far as local Church members
had hoped, "We had hoped it would be visible from the interstate, but
it's not," said Beth Morrill, regional public affairs director for
the Church. The temple is located near Interstate 65 at U.S. 31 in
north Jefferson County.
The News' article talks about the LDS beliefs in baptism for the
dead, mentioning the local LDS Family History Center in Cahaba
Heights. It also gives background on LDS beliefs regarding the angel
Moroni.
