SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- A test of the LDS Church's new Conference
Center Tuesday night snarled traffic in downtown Salt Lake as
thousands showed up to help the Church test the building's sound,
security and other systems in preparation for this coming weekend's
General Conference. The test involved thousands of volunteers from
local LDS congregations who were admitted by ticket, just as they
will be for General Conference.
The test was previously announced to the media, but the media were
not invited to attend. The attendees filled the building so that
sound and lighting could be tested for those in the hall, and also so
that audio and video signals sent outside the building could also be
fine-tuned and checked.
Officials also were able to test systems for controlling traffic
flow, parking, seating and ushering. It is not known if the snarled
traffic will be repeated on Saturday and Sunday because of the
differences between weekday traffic and weekend traffic. However, the
LDS Church did agree this past weekend to rent Salt Lake City's new
TRAX light rail system in an attempt to relieve possible traffic
pressures.
