Is Conference An April Fools' Hoax?
Deseret News 31Mar00 N1
By Lynn Arave: Deseret News radio editor
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- While there is no doubt that some disgruntled
people think the LDS Church's General Conference is like an April
Fools joke, you wouldn't think that the Deseret News would be one of
them. The LDS Church-owned publication seemed to classify Conference
that way in an article on Friday, however.
The Deseret News' Lynn Arave wrote a story on April Fools' hoaxes,
and even mentioned the most famous radio hoax, the 1938 Orson Welles
Haloween radio broadcast based on H.G. Wells' novel "The War of the
Worlds." Arave then went on to list some of the more unusual April
Fools' radio pranks staged in Salt Lake City. The article listed 5
pranks before then listing LDS General Conference, noting that it was
scheduled to be carried on the radio on Saturday, April 1st.
