SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- As a prominent booster of the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum, Utah Rep. Chris Cannon has introduced federal
legislation to reauthorize the budget for the 7-year-old collection of
exhibits on one of the darkest periods in history. "The museum offers an
opportunity for its visitors to reflect upon the moral and spiritual
questions raised by the Holocaust," said the Republican from Utah's 3rd
District, who is now in his second term.
Since its opening in 1993, the museum has enjoyed success and
controversy. It was created to commemorate the systematic killing of
European Jews and other groups, along with the years of Nazi persecution
leading up to and during World War II.
Controversy came over the writings of a scholar who likened the Nazi
treatment of Jews to the Israelis' treatment of the Palestinian
Arabs, and a 1998 invitation to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat that
led to the resignation of the museum's then-director. It now hopes
to broaden its advanced-study unit to serve as a training center for
Holocaust scholars.
