TUCSON, ARIZONA -- Local LDS leaders were mentioned in
a recent Arizona Daily Star article discussing
highlights from upcoming Easter Sunday sermons.
Bishop Lonnie Sharp of the Countryside ward was quoted
in saying, "My message will be that the life and death
of Christ provides great hope, and that the essence of
the Gospel is essentially his atonement."
Other local churches planned sermons and messages
were also featured. The Reverend Thomas Cahalane of
Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church added that he
would be emphasizing the Jubilee year, marking the
2,000th anniversary of Christ's birth. When asked if
the LDS church also had special plans for this
monumental year, Bishop Sharp said that there was so
special significance attached to the year 2000, except
to say that, "Whenever we have an anniversary, it
brings us back to the original event. That love that
was demonstrated then is something we should remember
and make meaningful in our lives."
Thomas Elam, LDS Bishop in Sahuarita, said he would
not be speaking on Easter Sunday, but that two youth
and two adult speakers from the congregation would be
delivering talks. The theme for the sacrament meeting
would be love.
