ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA -- A new interfaith group in Orange County,
including a representative of the LDS Church, called for less
tolerance and more appreciation. The remarks, made on the National
Day of Prayer, were meant to promote equality and the appreciation of
differences.
"The word 'tolerance' is too hierarchical," Ron Farmer, Chapman
University's chaplain, told 200 community leaders at the breakfast on
Champan campus Thursday. "It indicates that there is someone above
and someone below - a 'tolerator' and a 'toleratee.' It is much
better to use the word "appreciate." Appreciate diversity."
The new Interfaith Council of Orange County includes Sikhs, Muslims,
Hindus, Jews, Scientologists, American Indians, Baha'is, Buddhists
and members of several Christian denominations, including the LDS
Church. The group hopes to find common ground among the faiths and
combat community problems, according to Pastor Mike Holloway, the
group's president.
LDS Church representative Earl Garr summed up the council's goals by
quoting Joseph Smith, "We are to feed the hungry, clothe the naked,
provide for the widow, dry up the tear of the orphan and comfort the
afflicted, whether in this church or in any other, or in no church at
all, wherever we find them."
