PROVO, UTAH -- Some enterprising BYU students have found a way to
make a buck out of the Olympics coming to Utah. Marketing student
Ryan Dame, economics major Erik Baty, and computer science major Ryan
Gee have combined their studies with a student's desire to pay the
bills.
The three are offering housing options for travelers planning on
going to Utah for the 2002 Winter Games. For a fee, Utahns willing
to offer space during that time period can register with them at
http://Housing2002.com.
Because of tight trademark laws around the Olympics, the site must
avoid using certain words. When the website began in January of
2000, the trio quickly heard from the Salt Lake Organizing
Committee. The SLOC wanted to make sure the young men were
not breaking any rules. But as Ryan Dame says, "even bad
publicity has been good for business."
The official SLOC site for housing (http://www.saltlake2002.com)
lists approximately 20 thousand hotel rooms within two hours of
Salt Lake City. However with over 70 thousand visitors expected,
the three BYU students think their website will help ease the crunch
for housing during the games.
