SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- A bronze angel will soon stand on a hill
located in Iceland overlooking "Mormon Pond" where many of the first
Icelandic converts were baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints.
Descendants of those first pioneers, will attend two summer
dedications commemorating the early missionary effort in Iceland. The
first will be the dedication of the 9-foot sculpture of the bronze
angel "The Messenger." The second dedication, which will be a few
days later, will be of a museum display and genealogy center which
honors the 409 people who joined the Church and then emigrated to
Utah starting in 1854.
The angel will stand on Iceland's Westman Island in memory of the
emigrants who left Iceland for Utah between 1854 and 1913. She will
overlook not only "Mormon Pond," but also the Atlantic Ocean.
