Disabled Mormon Mom Fights For Kid
Canadian Press 6Jun00 D2
TORONTO, CANADA -- A Mormon family in Canada are taking Ottawa Children's
Aid to court to regain custody of their newborn son, according to reports on
CTV News Monday. Children's Aid took the five-day-old child from his mother
while she was still in the hospital claiming that the mother wasn't capable
of caring for the child.
The mother, who has cerebral palsy, uses a wheelchair and has little use of
her hands. "They basically fear that I'll drop him or hurt him in some way
and that's not true," the mother told CTV. "I did a lot of the care on my
own."
In addition, the father is supportive, saying he can do most of the physical
work and friends in their Mormon Church say they will help also.
The couple have been trying to have a child for some time, suffering four
miscarriages before their son was born. "Basically it's painful losing
another one," said the father. "We've been trying so hard."
Officials for Ottawa Children's Aid refused to comment on the case.
