SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- As LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley's 90th
birthday approaches, civic and government leaders are extending their best
wishes. While Hinckley was in Thailand last week, Deputy Prime Minister
Bhichai Rattakul treated him to a "pre-birthday celebration." And yesterday,
the consul general of Israel stopped by LDS Church headquarters for a
courtesy call and to drop off a gift.
The Consul, Yuval Rotem, who works out of Los Angeles for the Israeli
government, presented President Hinckley with a silver menorah, the set of
candleholders used in the celebration of Hanukkah. Rotem also communicated
"the congratulations and best wishes of the state of Israel."
Rotem also thanked Hinckley for "his long-standing friendship to the Jewish
people, and for his valued efforts in strengthening ties between the LDS
Church and Israel." He noted "the importance of the Brigham Young University
Center in Jerusalem," and suggested that the "key to the relationship" is
mutual respect.
