LAYTON, UTAH-- The largest vineyard operated by the LDS Church relief
system may be sold. The 40-acre field is expected to become part of a
buffer system around a landfill run by Wasatch Energy Systems.
Although the vineyard produces 390,000 pounds of grapes annually, the
church's emphasis on worldwide relief and disaster aid makes grapes
less useful. John McCormack, manager of the vineyard before the field
was plowed one month ago, said that "What it really just boiled down
to was it just wasn't a life sustaining substance. They have to make
room right now...to provide life sustaining substances." The grapes
were used to make grape juice concentrate, but the product was deemed
too heavy to ship economically as part of the church's worldwide
relief effort.
