Ground Breaking Guitar Duo Releases Unique Recording of Popular Hymns

Ground Breaking Guitar Duo Releases Unique Recording of Popular Hymns SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- On April 18, 2000, Shadow Mountain released, nationwide, Joy in Every Sound, the new album of inspirational classical guitar music from the Mark Small/Robert Torres Guitar Duo.

Joy in Every Sound features new arrangements of popular hymns in an unusual and rarely heard classical guitar setting. Fans and new listeners alike will appreciate the quiet elegance and simple dignity of the duo's music, which has released two previous albums with Shadow Mountain: Lord, I Would Follow Thee (1993) and the Pearl Award nominated Winterlight (1996).

Says Mark Small, "For years, composers and arrangers have found much in hymn melodies to fire the musical imagination. We have demonstrated our inspiration by fashioning these hymns into what we feel are concert-worthy classical guitar works."

Though the music on the album is wordless, the melodies and melodic fragments form a dialogue among the instruments so that even those listeners who are unfamiliar with the hymn lyrics will feel the power and sentiment behind each tune.

The 14-track recording, produced by Kenny Hodges (The Osmonds), features traditional melodies such as "For the Beauty of the Earth" and "From All That Dwell Below the Skies" as well as the less often heard, but equally lovely, hymns, "The Earth was Once a Garden Place" and "Where Can I Turn for Peace?"

In 1997, Mark Small and Robert Torres made history as the first guitarists ever to accompany the world renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir, in an event that was broadcast to an audience of 10 million listeners. Another feature that distinguishes the Small/Torres Duo from other guitar duos is that they have composed, transcribed or arranged all but a few of the pieces they have recorded.

The Small/Torres Duo album Winterlight received Pearl Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Album from the Faith Centered Music Association.

Joy in Every Sound is available on CD and cassette at all Deseret Book locations, through deseretbook.com and wherever Shadow Mountain and Deseret Book recordings are sold.

About the Artist: Mark Small is Editor of Berklee Today, the magazine of the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where he is also a respected faculty member.

Robert Torres is a past winner of the American String Teacher's Association solo guitar competition and a top finalist in the Guitar Foundation of America duo competition.

Also Available: Lord, I Would Follow Thee and Winterlight. Released and Distributed by Shadow Mountain. The Water is Wide and Works by European Masters. Released by Mel Bay Publications.
