Mormons pay homage to pioneers
GWINNETT, GEORGIA -- The Snellville Ward celebrated pioneer day by donating
time to the Vines Botanical Gardens on Saturday, July 22nd. Ward members
cleared away underbrush by the lake in the Gardens, cut and hauled away
trees and brushes, and spread mulch around the buildings.
According to Melanie Johns of Snelville, the service led Church members to
remember the struggles of the pioneers. Jill Rucker, who helped organize the
project, agreed, "When one of the young people helping started to complain
that the work was hard, I reminded her about the pioneers, and that they
didn't get to have water girls come by and bring them water as we did and
they didn't get to run through sprinklers like we did when we got hot. It
seemed to help a little, and she continued working."
Rucker also said that the day's service was a success. "It was fun to work
as families, and it was good to see how everyone pulled together to get
things done."
