RM Football Player Returns in Shape
HONOLULU, HAWAII -- After a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints, Sione Tafuna is back at the University
of Hawaii and ready to play football. The 6 ft. 175 lb. offensive
lineman is more fit for the game now, than when he left. Most LDS
missionaries require months of training to recoup their former status
without the benefit of weight room or regimented diet, but no so for
Tafuna.
"He's big and strong, changes direction very well, is very fluid, and is
an aggressive kind of guy we need up front with leadership abilities. He's
already played at this level and I believe will be a very good football
player for us," said offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh.
"I want to tell you right now that he has worked his tail off to get into
shape." "I just can't wait to instruct him and see how good he can be in
this offense. Right now, we have him backing up at center and guard, but we
think center is where he'll be needed most, " Cavanaugh added.
Tafuna was part of former head coach Bob Wagner's final recruiting class
and was redshirted in 1995 before serving as a backup center to Shane
Oliveira in 1996 and 1997. Tafuna left the program in 1998 and returns with
two years of remaining eligibility. Tafuna was born in New Zealand and
graduated in 1995 from Kalani High.
