LDS Chapel Arsonist Pleas Guilty
SANDY, UTAH -- The 19-year-old man who set an LDS chapel on fire in
January plead guilty on Tuesday to one count of first-degree felony aggravated
arson for setting an LDS seminary and chapel on fire on Monday, January 3rd.
Prosecutors dismissed four other charges against Kevin James Holfeltz in
exchange for the plea.
At the time of his arrest Holfeltz told police he set the fire because he
was angry with his parents over their attempts to force him to attend
Church. Fortunately, a passerby noticed the fire soon after it was set,
limiting the damage to the seminary portion of the building. At the time,
investigators estimated the damage at $50,000.
Holfeltz will be sentenced in November. He faces up to life in prison.
