Lethbridge Member Dispels First Nations Myths
LETHBRIDGE, CANADA -- West Lethbridge resident, David Forbes,
organised a forum to discuss the coverage of aboriginal issues by
Southern Alberta news media. Backed by six months of study and
sources, Forbes, a member of the Lethbridge Alberta West Stake,
revealed that such coverage ranged only from fair to poor, with
newspaper coverage rating the highest.
Forbes, a Carleton University student who is working toward a masters
in journalism, said the purpose behind Sunday's forum was to discuss
whether such coverage accurately and fairly reported local native
peoples' lives, culture and customs. Surprisingly enough, many of the
panel members, a number of whom where media representatives, admitted
that media coverage of First Nations peoples in Southern Alberta is
not fair.
Though reactions between forum members "ranged from "distracted to
heated," a general consensus was reached that both the media and the
aboriginal community need to improve their communication to and
knowledge of each other.
