LDS Women Are Ms. and Mrs. Utah Achievement 2000-01

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Miss Utah Achievement(TM)is talented, beautiful, goal-oriented and a community activist/leader. So where is her bathing suit? There isn't one. In fact, none of the bright young women who enter the Miss American Achievement program will ever have to wear a swimsuit. Miss Utah Achievement TM program is 100% achievement based. "Because Smart is Beautiful!!"

In 1997 Dr. Lori Sikorszky envisioned a pageant program where women of all ages, sizes and cultural backgrounds would be recognized for their lifetime of achievements. The result was the creation of the Miss American Achievement TM Scholarship and Recognition Program. Now in its 4th year, hundreds of contestants have applied and competed for the title of Miss American Achievement. TM

This program is essentially held as a mail-in competition. All contestants submit an achievement book documenting their respective lifetime of achievements. Contestants are evaluated on personal essays on their definition of achievement, academic accomplishments, and four of the following areas which include: extra curricular activities/ social activities, leadership roles/entrepreneurship, community service/volunteerism, skills/talents/abilities/the arts, health and fitness/athletics, career achievements, personal challenges that have been overcome. State winners are selected and then the competition begins again to select the top finalists and then the selection of the National Titleholders. Here are the outstanding state representatives of Utah:

For 1995-96 1997-98 1999-2000 Kimberly is a passionate supporter of Youth Mentor Programs; both locally and on a national level. "Mentoring is a working partnership between a responsible caring adult and young person, where each work side by side to reach clearly defined goals and aspirations. A mentor offers his or her talents and friendship, to guide and direct an individual down the path of success. It has been my continuing goal to promote Youth Mentor programs across the State of Utah. I have addressed civic and local organizations and companies to take the initiative to mentor one individual. I believe that the youth in Utah are excelling in school and in life because we have individuals who care about their future."

MISS UTAH ACHIEVEMENT TM 2000-01, AIMEE REID is working to attain a B.S. in nursing. Aimee has empathy and desire to help others. She enjoys volunteering as a hospice care giver and as an advocate for teen parents teaching prenatal education and parenting skills. She provides respite pediatric nursing care and is a health educator at correctional facilities, schools and treatment programs. She has volunteered for the Arthritis Foundation as well since being diagnosed with Systemic Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis 9 years ago. Aimee has many scholastic honors and awards for her other accomplishments. She is very talented and received years of intensive training at a school for the performing arts.

The pageant industry has seen many pageant systems come and go. Many of them have emphasized personal accomplishments, but none have exclusively focused on achievement based criteria . The Miss American Achievement program is a relatively new concept in pageantry. This program is literally redefining what beauty really is and setting a standard of excellence for other women around the world.
