Murphy Again On Baseball Hall Of Fame Ballot
NEW YORK, NEW YORK -- Baseball sportswriters have voted again, and LDS
baseball star Dale Murphy was again on the ballot. But while several writers
who have publicly released their votes say they have voted for Murphy, it is
unlikely that he will be inducted. Murphy was on the ballot for the third
time this year, along with better-known players like Kirby Puckett, Davie
Winfield, "Goose" Gossage, Tommy John and Steve Garvey. Results of the votes
will be announced next week.
Being inducted into the Hall of Fame isn't easy. Baseball writers can vote
for up to 10 of the 32 eligible players listed on the ballot, but can vote
for no one if they choose. To be inducted, a player must receive votes on
75% of the ballots cast.
Murphy's record puts him very close. He hit 398 home runs in his career and
was selected as the National League's MVP twice. He also snagged five gold
glove awards and played on the National League all-star team seven times.
