LDS Politician appointed to the Alberta cabinet
EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA -- In the election held in Alberta on the
12th of March 2001, two members of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints were elected MLAs (Members of the Legislative
Assembly). Ian McClelland won as a member of the ruling Progressive
Conservatives and Greg Melchin was re-elected from Calgary.
McClelland, a former federal Member of Parliament, ran for the ruling
Progressive Conservatives, and beat his Liberal and New Democrat
opponents handily to win the Edmonton riding of Edmonton-Rutherford
(see

Greg Melchin was re-elected in Calgary Nose Hill and, it was
announced this afternoon, has been appointed to the provincial
cabinet as Minister of Revenue (see:
http://www.gov.ab.ca/gov.cfm ). Br. Melchin is the first LDS
cabinet minister since Hon. Jack Ady, MLA for Cardston, resigned
from politics several years ago.
