Challenge by Mormons to Nauvoo Election Continues
NAUVOO, ILLINOIS -- A challenge by several members of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over registration for the April 3rd
Nauvoo election continues, and Illinois State Election officials
refuse to comment on their investigation. Several LDS Church members
complained that they were not allowed to register for the April 3rd
election, in which an LDS Church member was running for mayor. The
candidate lost the election by more votes than the number of members
who complained.
According to the assistant director of the Illinois State Board of
Elections, Dan White, an investigation into the allegations
continues, and is likely to continue for several months. "This
process is very normal, but we aren't operating with a sense of
urgency because the election is over," White said. "This also is a
complaint we get about once every election cycle."
Between 20 and 30 LDS Church members who were residents of Nauvoo
temporarily while serving LDS missions in the town or working with
the construction of the Nauvoo Temple. If irregularites are found in
the election, the Illinois Attorney General's office will determine
whether or not to pursue charges and prosecution.
