Mormon Battalion March Remembered

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CALIFORNIA -- Some 50 LDS Church members marched across part of Laguna Niguel Saturday to commemorate the 1847 march of the Mormon Battalion. The group trekked about four miles to Sycamore Park in Mission Viejo, where a marker commemorates the Battalion's march. This is the first time church members in Orange County have commemorated the march, according to the Orange County register. The Mormon Battalion's march is widely considered to be the longest march in U.S. history. After arriving in California, Battalion members built the first U.S. courthouse building in San Diego, helped build Fort Moore in Los Angeles and even were working at Sutter's Fort when gold was discovered the following year.
