San Bernardino Stake President on Catholic Announcement on Baptism
SAN BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA -- Responding to a query from the San Bernardino
Sun, San Bernardino Stake President George W. Stehmeier said that a July
17th ruling by leaders of the Roman Catholic Church will have no impact on
how the LDS Church works with Catholics. The Catholic ruling said that
converts from the LDS Church must now be baptized, a change from the
Vatican's previous policy. President Stehmeier says that the Vatican's
policy is the same one the LDS Church has had towards Catholics, "What they
stated in their declaration is what we've had for years." He added that
humanitarian efforts are not affected, "We have our humanitarian efforts,"
he said. "We work together on these and we'll continue to do so." Local
Catholic spokesman the Rev. Howard Lincoln agreed, "We continue to look
forward to further ecumenical cooperation with the Mormons as we do with
other religious groups who do not share our particular Catholic beliefs."
