RM 2nd in Massachusetts' Ouimet Memorial Golf Tournament
MILTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- Returned LDS missionary Tele Wightman dropped
into second place in the final round of the 34th Francis Ouimet
Memorial Tournament Friday after leading the field by a stroke the
day before. Wightman, a senior at the University of South Florida,
recorded his best finish in men's level play in the tournament.
A native of Hoyoke, Massachusetts, Wightman served an LDS mission to
Taiwan, where he says he managed to play golf just twice, "I didn't
have quite the money to play more," he said. "It cost $200 each time,
half the money I was given each month."
But in spite of going two years without playing much, Wightman is now
playing well. Earlier this summer he reached the quarter finals of
the Massachusetts Amateur and snagged a 3rd alternate spot for the US
Amateur. He also finished 11th in the New England Amateur, where he
was just one stroke behind the leader after the third round, but fell
apart and shot a 77 in the final round.
Wightman led the Ouimet Memorial by one shot after Thursday's second
round, but couldn't keep up with Frank Vana, Jr. in the final round,
shooting a 4-over 76 to Vana's par, leaving Vana with his second
Ouimet Memorial win and Wightman in second place, "I just didn't make
any putts; the pins were tough out there. It was rough being
aggressive. It was also windy. I had to three-putt the 11th to go 3
over and Frank took a five-shot lead, putting him at 3 under after he
made a 2-footer."
