Missionaries Help with Birdhouse Kits |
Four LDS missionaries were noticed in the Oak
Ridge, Tennessee Oakridger for their assistance to the American
Museum of Science and Energy. The Elders helped prepare bluebird
house kits recently for the museum's annual Bluebird and Wildlife
Habitat Box Building event that was to be held January 26th. The
newspaper featured a picture of the four missionaries, Elder Hadlock,
Elder Saunders, Elder Crowe and Elder Davis. |

Three LDS Chapels Evacuated After Bomb Threats |
Three separate bomb threats phoned to LDS
meetinghouses in Sandy, Utah led local officials to evacuate the
buildings on Sunday, January 13th. The meetinghouses were closed for
the remainder of the day while police searched the buildings for
explosive devices. No such devices were found, and police are
treating the threats as hate crimes because the caller expressed
dislike for the LDS Church. |
New Palmyra Chapel Almost Complete |
A new, 24,000-square-foot chapel for the Palmyra
Ward is quickly taking shape on Temple Road. Construction crews have
nearly finished framing the building, and are ahead of schedule due
to mild weather. "We're really thrilled with the way it is turning
out," said David Cook, Rochester New York Stake President. He
anticipates that the chapel will be completed by the fall, as planned. |

U Alaska Features Two LDS Basketball Players |
The University of Alaska at Anchorage has two
LDS players on its NCAA Division II basketball team, observes
Meridian Magazine's Kelly Martinez. Martinez interviewed the
teammates, Ty Shippen and Bryson Vaughn, about how they fit in with
the team and how they integrate their religion in their lives in
Alaska. Both are married, and Bryson is a returned missionary.
Shippen once played for BYU, but didn't get much playing time. Bryson
was on the Ricks College team, and transferred to the University of
Alaska. |

Anne Bright, a Utah-based LDS Church member, has
brought her considerable training and experience to bear in helping
children gain self esteem. She has started www.bzlearning.com to produce
products that promote happiness in family life, self-esteem, and the
ability to use free agency wisely when making life's choices. She
hopes to eventually use the website to open a childcare center. |

LDS Student Helps Emergency Service Agencies Prepare |
An 18-year-old LDS student is helping the Utah
County Search and Rescue Team get prepared for mass casualty
scenarios. Trent Clifton, a Springville High School student, has
worked with the team for more than two years, making 16 backboards
for the emergency services agencies in the county. "It is really
important for us to have these boards, especially right now with the
Olympics coming," said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Tom Hodgson. |

open-ended run of performances starting February 12th at the Flamingo
in her hometown, Las Vegas. Knight will perform seven shows over five

Mormon Columnist Jack Anderson Starts Comic Strip |
LDS Church member Jack Anderson, a long-time
syndicated columnist sometimes called "The Mormon Muckraker," is
starting a comic strip exclusively in the Salt Lake Tribune. The
strip, called "Kilroy-Go-Round" after the fabled World War II
American icon "Kilroy" and Anderson's own column, "Washington
Merry-Go-Round," will bring Anderson's view of Washington to the
comics. |

The renovation of the LDS Tenth Ward Chapel
in Salt Lake City was awarded a merit award by the Salt Lake Historic
Landmark Commission. The award recognizes projects that exceed the
design standards for historic districts and buildings listed on the
Salt Lake City Register of Cultural Resources. |
