Design for "Utah" Quarter May Feature Beehive and Seagull
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- The design for the "Utah" quarter, one of a
series of 50 quarters being issued by the U.S. Mint in order of the
state's entrance into the union, will apparently use the
traditionally Mormon, but also very Utahn images of a beehive and a
seagull.
A Utah State House committee approved the suggested design
including the beehive and seagull on Friday, January 25th, but did
not address the Mint's design specifications, which prohibit using
religious images. Most lawmakers didn't see the religious nature of
the images as an issue because the images are also connected with the
state, "The beehive is a symbol of our industry," said Ogden Democrat
Neil Hansen. "The seagull is the state bird."
