Playwright takes on Mountain Meadows (Theater Feature: Getting Physical: Two-Headed)
LA Weekly 25Jun99 L2
by Luis Reyes
One of the plays on the schedule for the Fifth Annual Common Ground
Festival held at UCLA last weekend, was about two girls growing up
Mormon.
Playwright Julie Jensen's "Two Headed" was commissioned by the
national theater-support group ASK, and performed at the festival.
The play uses the memories of the 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre as a
way of understanding two girls that are growing up Mormon in the
1880s. Rather than condemn those involved in the massacre, the play
seeks to understand their motives as a way of understanding the
forces that shaped the girls.
Unfortunately, the sparce information about the play doesn't indicate
the religious affiliation of the playwright or shed any additional
light on the play itself.
