Well-known LDS Author and Psychologist Carlfred Broderick dies (Psychologist C. Broderick dies at 67)

Carlfred B. Broderick, a well-know authority on courtship, marriage and family, died Tuesday, July 27th at his home in Cerritos, California of cancer. Broderick was very influential through his many books and his speaking at conferences, seminars and workshops, both in Mormon venues and elsewhere. His writing has appeared in LDS Church publications, Dialogue, Time, Life, Newsweek and the New York Times.

Broderick was a professor of sociology at the University of Southern California and director of the university's Marriage and Family Counselling Training Program. His textbook, "Marriage and the Family" is still widely used. Chairman of USC's department of Sociology Jon Miller said Broderick was a leader in his discipline, "Nationally and internationally, Professor Broderick was a leading family research scholar and pioneering family therapist. As a colleague and friend, he was a person of great intelligence, compassion and wit. He volunteered for the hardest teaching assignments year after year and fulfilled them with relish."

Born in Salt Lake City, Broderick grew up in Long Beach, California. He recieved a Ph.D. in child development and family relations from Cornell University. He also was a past president of the Cerritos Stake, and most recently served as patriarch.
