LDS faithful keep saving
When it comes to the unexpected, Mormons are ready for the worst, even for
such dire events as Y2K, widespread power outages, and food shortages. LDS
church members were even prepared for the recent tornado in Salt Lake City.
According to news reports, within 30 minutes after a tornado struck downtown
Salt Lake City on Aug. 11, Mormon volunteers were out directing traffic,
checking neighborhoods and cleaning up debris.
The Mormon church developed its own welfare services plan in 1936, which
includes advising members and their families to become self-reliant in such
areas as financial and resource management, home, food, and clothing.
The church continues to recommend that members avoid debt and to save during
times of plenty for times of need. That includes the storing of
a year's supply of food, clothing and fuel.
