Legal-aid campaign reaches a goal, gets matching funds
Deseret News 1Sep99 C8
The Legal Aid campaign kicked-off this past January by President
James E. Faust of the LDS Church's First Presidency has reached its
goal. The campaign, run by three nonprofit agencies united as "and
Justice for all" has raised the $300,000 needed to obtain a $100,000
challenge grant from the LDS Foundation, the LDS Church's charitable
arm.
"We're thrilled that we've been able to get their match," Joani
Dykstra, spokeswoman for the group which is made up of Utah Legal
Services, the Disability Law Center and the Legal Aid Society of Salt
Lake. The fund were raised from Utah's 5,200 lawyers, who were urged
to contribute the equivalent of 2two billable hours. Law firms
donated more than two-thirds of the money raised, individuals
donating the rest. Some of the funds have already been used to start
a Disability Law Center in Provo, Utah.
