Temple lights up future of Nauvoo

The services of a city planner are the most important side benefit to the town of Nauvoo's deal with the LDS Church allowing construction of the Nauvoo Temple, says mayor Tom Wilson. In addition to the planner, the town will get $471,440 in cash and traffic and parking studies.

Bonneville still can't buy FM station in Salt Lake City

LDS Church-owned Bonneville Communications has for years been unable to purchase an FM station in the Salt Lake City area as a companion for its AM station, KSL. Deseret News reporter, noting that national firm Clear Channel, the largest owner of radio stations in the U.S., has more than 1,000 stations and covers 46 of the top 50 radio markets in the U.S., wonders why the FCC still keeps Bonneville from purchasing an FM station in Salt Lake. Clear Channel owns seven stations in Salt Lake City.

ZCMI sale prompting queries over Orem pact

The city of Orem, Utah signed an agreement with ZCMI last year giving the beleaguered retailer a multi-million dollar tax break. Orem is now looking at the pact to see if the purchase of ZCMI is a breach of the agreement or if May Department Stores will inherit the tax break.

Most ZCMI jobs secure -- for now

While most ZCMI employees' jobs are secure, as with most ownership changes, some employees' jobs will be eliminated, including management and support staff above the store level. The staff at each ZCMI store should stay the same. The biggest impact on most current employees will come when May removes the ZCMI name from the stores and opens them on Sundays. Some store managers worry that they will loose long-time employees with the change because of Sunday schedules.

The group Friends of the Mill is trying to save the Baron Woolen Mill in Brigham City, Utah, a century-old woolen mill built on the banks of Box Elder Creek in Brigham City by a cooperative led by then-Apostle Lorenzo Snow. The group is seeking to turn the mill into a living history park.

ZCMI last of long-time Salt Lake retailers

While ZCMI isn't the only long-time Salt Lake City retailer to be purchased or go out of business, it has lasted very long. Tribune reporter Sahm suggests that this may be because its image and history has been connected to the LDS Church.

Bonneville-owned classical music station drops "Live from the Met"

KDFC radio in San Francisco, owned by the LDS Church's Bonneville Communications, has decided it will not carry the 1999-2000 season of "Live from the Met," which has filled the Saturday afternoons of many an opera and classical music afficcionado. While music fans have complained to the station and the FCC, columnist Salter says the blame should be placed on market forces, those driving classical stations to produce what some call "classical lite."

Since making changes to the format, Bonneville has added 100,000 new listeners. Bonneville purchased the station in April 1997 to the cheers of San Francisco classical music fans who were afraid new owners would dump classical music altogether. Another area station, KBZS in Palo Alto, will broadcast "Live from the Met."

Ohio firm sees market among Mormons for Sassafras Tea

H&K Products, Inc. says that they are basically the only manufacturer of sassafras tea. It doesn't even have any competition from Celestial Seasonings, the huge Boulder, Colorado tea maker, which says while it does get requests for sassafras tea, it doesn't get enough requests to justify making it. The company says Mormons are a strong market for its tea, which is made from the bark of the root of the sassafras tree.
