Plane problem leads to LDS first
HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA -- The dedication of the Halifax Temple was
originally scheduled for Saturday, but was postponed until Sunday when
the airplane President Hinckley uses required repairs on Friday. But
switching the dedication of the Halifax Temple to Sunday caused a
conflict with the deciation of the Temple in Regina, Saskatchewan.
To resolve the conflict, President Boyd K. Packer of the Quorum of the
Twelve dedicated the Regina, Saskatchewan Temple on Sunday, and in the
process the Church dedicated two Temples on the same day for the first
time.
Local leaders in Saskatchewan were disappointed, but only had to make
minor changes to their schedules. "The only last-minute change we're
having to make is getting used to not having President Hinckley here,"
said Temple President Lorin J. Mendenhall. "We're looking forward to
being here with President Packer. We're a little disappointed that
President Hinckley can't be here but, generally, everybody is very
positive, taking it fine. We're definitely excited about the temple
being here. We're thrilled to share this day with Halifax. It's kind of
a historic event in that respect ó having two temples dedicated on the
same day."
