SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Garner Meads, the 6-foot-9 Brighton High
School basketball star, is not yet ready to make a college choice.
Although the early signing period for high school seniors will end
without him adding his name to a university's list, Meads says the
date really never has meant anything to him. "For me, my word is as
good as a letter of intent any day," he said. "When I decide, I will
stick to it. I am not going to go back on my word, so I don't know
what everybody is worried about."
Meads, a prospect listed as high as No. 21 in the country, said he would like
to decide on a college before Christmas, and sign by April. Brigham Young,
Stanford and Utah remain in the running, although he refuses to say which
school is leading. A mission for the LDS Church after high school will come
first, however, providing church officials allow him to leave a few months
before his 19th birthday. He won't be available to a college until the 2002
season.
