"> Candidates focus on Christian beliefs
CNN All Politics (Des Moines Register) 15Dec99 N2
By Stephen Buttry: Des Moines Register

A recent debate in Des Moines, Iowa, saw Republican presidential hopefuls talk about Jesus Christ. Front-runner George W. Bush misunderstood a question. He was asked what political philosopher or thinker he most identified with. Bush thought he was asked who had the most influence in his life. He responded, "Christ, because he changed my heart. When you turn your heart and your life over to Christ, when you accept Christ as the savior, it changes your heart. It changes your life. And that's what happened to me."

Utah senator Orrin Hatch responded that Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan were his political role models. However, he then said, "But I bear witness to Christ, too. I really know him to be the savior of the world. And that means more to me than almost anything else I know."

Baptist candidate Gary Bauer told the gathering that Jesus Christ is his favorite political thinker. "If America's in trouble in the next century, it will be because we forgot what he taught us."
